autumnal equinox mugwort magic & wildcrafting

autumnal equinox mugwort magic & wildcrafting

Commonly thought of as a weed in modern times, Mugwort is a highly versatile plant that has a vast history of medicinal, culinary and magical uses.

The scientific name is Artemisia vulgaris, after Artemis, the Goddess of the Hunt. Vulgaris means common - yet Mugwort's effects are anything but. This plant is associated with the moon, feminine energy, and can be used for divination. Mugwort induces lucid dreaming and aids in astral travel. On a more practical level, it aids and stimulates digestion, acts as a topical astringent and anesthetic, and so much more.

In this experiential workshop, we will learn how to identify and respectfully harvest local wild mugwort. With our harvest we will make smudge wands and crowns in honor of Midsummer's Eve. We will also undergo a plant journey meditation and commune with this magical spirit. You'll walk away knowing how to work with mugwort in practical, culinary, and magical ways.

Please bring a journal and a pen, and a basket or bag for your wildcrafting haul!

This workshop will be held rain or shine.

healing plant walk & experience - fridays at MINKA

Every plant has medicine. We all knew this once, yet in only a few generations many of us have forgotten. Fortunately the memory is still there, deep in our bones. Here is an opportunity to remember.

Deeply rooted amidst the layers of built environment, healing plants are thriving. They are waiting to teach us resilience and other important lessons. Join us to learn from these wise teachers, our elders, the plants.

We’ll begin class at MINKA Brooklyn and head out together to Prospect Park to explore the healing plants that grow all around us. Using all of our senses we’ll experience the plants, and connect with them in meditation. We’ll drink a nourishing infusion, either a plant that is currently growing in the park or one that is in season in our bioregion. In case of inclement weather, we’ll connect with the plants indoors, tasting infusions, looking at specimens, and in meditation.

Investment: $20

This workshop will be held rain or shine. If you have any questions, email: liz.neves@mac.com

Class will not be held on September 8, October 6, October 27.

heal the past to heal the future: a family tree workshop

My 3rd Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Hyde

My 3rd Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Hyde

We are the result of generations of relationships. Relationships built on love & war, tension & tenderness, of happenstance. As humans we have many opportunities to empower ourselves and each other. Opportunities to establish connections that nourish ourselves and the whole. We have a responsibility to break the patterns that no longer serve us. Going to our roots and working with our ancestors and family lineage can help move forward to live our higher purpose and embody our luminous selves.

Session 1 : Journey to the Past

Session 2: Shapeshifting: Creative Family Tree building/Exploration

Session 3: Shaping the Future

We will work creatively to envision our family tree through meditation, journeying, and collaging. Please bring as much information about your family tree as you can. Also please bring personal objects for the altar and for your family tree.

We look forward to holding space for this unique approach to healing!

giving thanks to the water protectors: potluck, action, and fundraiser

This is an event in support of the Water Protectors at Standing Rock, peacefully resisting the Dakota Access Pipeline. Details of what we'll be doing are below the contact form.

If you are interested in attending or helping us organize, inquire below. Thank you!

An alternative Thanksgiving ceremony*

Out of a realization that the bodies of all human beings are over 70% water, and that we are all called to be water protectors, we plan this Thanksgiving, to gather with family, friends, and neighbors to give thanks for the mystery and miracle of water. It is threatened everywhere.

We will gather in Prospect Park and make our way to the boathouse together.

We'll hold a simple ceremony to express that we realize we all play a part in the desecration or healing of water. Originally, before human despoiling of water, all water was pristine.

We'll express gratitude for the heroic courage, endurance, and inspiration of the Water Protectors encamped at Standing Rock to resist any further despoiling and polluting of the Missouri River by private corporate invaders on their lands, which are historically protected by the Treaty of 1851.

We'll reflect on how fictitious aspects of the Thanksgiving story have also diminished the true meaning of what all peoples long to do at the end of a harvest season – gather with loved ones to express gratitude for the sheer miracle of food and existence.

We are awakening to the profound desecration that has been done to water everywhere. To help change this pattern of destruction and disrespect, we'll:

  • Collect donations for the Water Protectors at Standing Rock, here is a list of current needs (particularly the Medic Healer Council)
  • Write letters to Pope Francis to rescind the Doctrine of Discovery that ultimately led to the colonization of this continent and the genocide of the people who lived here for thousands of years prior to European conquest
  • Share food with deep gratitude for the energy that goes into growing, distributing, preparing it and the energy and nourishment it provides us

*This action is inspired by a recent newsletter from Genesis Farm in Blairstown, NJ. Many of the words used are theirs, and with permission, are blended with my own above. I greatly admire their work and, though they said I didn't need to give them credit for the words above, I felt it only right to mention them here. Check them out if you feel called!

herbal self prep for the waning light

Welcome to Autumn, the time of creative darkness, where we begin to spiral inward to plan and vision for next year’s light. Now is when our lives move indoors, our bodies slow down, and our minds become more contemplative. It’s also a time of receptivity, which could also mean susceptibility to illness and a case of the blues. In this hands-on experiential workshop, we’ll access the power of healing plants known for their immune-strengthening, nerve calming, and mood boosting properties. Everyone learns how to make and takes home their own mugwort anointing balm for visioning work.

herbs for a meditative mind, body & soul

Ever have one of those days where your mind is scattered in 50 directions and nothing seems to help bring you to a point of focused attention? Sometimes all we need is a little help from our friends – our green allies, the plants. Buddhist monks drink tea (Camellia sinensis) to stay alert during long meditation sessions. Tibetan ascetics took nourishment from boiled nettles.

In this experiential workshop, you'll sample and learn how to prepare teas, herbal infusions, and smudging herbs to help calm and center your mind, body & soul on and off the cushion. We’ll also look at some of the ways plants have influenced notorious meditators and vice-versa. Class closes with a brief sitting meditation—no prior experience necessary.

For all ages.

Kick off your shoes and feel the cool grass in your toes – summer is in full swing! With the warmth, there is freedom – our bodies are more flexible and easeful, and so become our minds. On the flipside, there is the tendency to get overheated, which can be a drag. Let's cool off together with the help of rose, oats, and mint and some cooling breaths.

Each week we'll focus on a different healing plant, each class we'll witness the abundant healing plants growing in the park. We'll sip herbal infusions, share intentions, and meditate, while the kiddos participate in fun nature activities right alongside us.

Class meets every Friday for 8 weeks, skipping July 1. Choose from a 10am or 11:45am start time.

In our modern way of living, where we are more familiar with computer screens than the plants growing outside our windows, there is a great loss. A loss of connection with the natural world that leads to common and easily remedied illnesses. By learning to connect with healing plants we can restore a sense of belonging and bring physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness to our families. In our brief time together we’ll talk about ways to develop a relationship with medicinal plants as well as taste some herbal infusions that are safe and effective for healing common ailments, from tummy aches and headaches to insomnia and stress (ailments which are often all interrelated!).

This is a talk for the Holistic Mom's Network, Brooklyn Chapter.

Held in Information Commons room #4 at the Brooklyn Public Library's Central Library.
